Human Tissue Authority and Regulations

Smart Cells are bound by the rules and regulations of the Human Tissue Authority (HTA) and have been granted HTA licence number 22522 for procurement of cord blood.

Smart Cells' facilities and accreditations

Our UK facilities exceed the highest standards of safety and cleanliness. The laboratory:

  • is a fully licensed, HTA accredited tissue bank  - the largest in the UK - which also processes and stores samples for the NHS and holds an HTA substansive licence (click here for more information).
  • is MHRA (Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Authority) accredited.
  • exceeds all current UK and EU directives and regulations and is ISO9001:2000 (quality management system) accredited.

We believe we offer our customers a superior level of service to other storage companies.

All processing procedures are undertaken in a sterile, controlled environment by specially trained staff.  We only use our laboratories for processing, including directly associated tests and storage. We do not conduct  research on any samples.

Our strict criteria for assessing samples ensures that a successful sample will have a high likelihood to be used for your child if they were to suffer from a disease or illness defined appropriate for a stem cell transplant.  Indeed, two of our customers have successfully retrieved and used their child's cord blood stem cells to help treat another ill child in their family.
