Healthcare Professionals - Collection advice

The information below gives a simple guide to the cord blood collection procedure, using the Smart Cells Collection Kit which is provided to all our customers prior to their baby's birth.

Cord blood should only be collected after the umbilical cord has been cut.

In the sterile environment of the delivery table, and immediately following the delivery (either by natural birth or Caesarean section):

  1. Disinfect the collection area (content collection set part 3 and 4). View image.
  2. Take the sterile blood bag out of its packaging. View image.
  3. Remove the needle top. View image.
  4. Prick the umbilical cord in the disinfected area. Collect as much blood as possible but a minimum of 60ml (100 grams). View image.
  5. After the blood collection bag is filled, squeeze the blood through the tube and into the bag and tie at least TWO (2) security knots before sealing the clamp shut. View image.
  6. Turn the bag over slowly, in order to let the cord blood mix with the CPD anticoagulant. View image.
  7. Affix the red ID label to the blood bag and place either the absorbent cloth or tissue paper with the sample before wrapping with the liquid coolant. Then place the sample in the foil envelope. View image.
  8. Ensure that the maternal blood sample is taken and enclosed or the maternal blood tests are provided with the cord blood sample. View image.
  9. Place the foil envelope and the maternal blood sample or test results in the white box and call DHL to collect the package. View image.
