If people sometimes wonder about the dedication shown by doctors and researchers to further medical developments, doubt no longer. For the first time, an actual doctor has cloned a human embryo using his own skin cells. Such an experiment advances the focus of research aimed at creating replacement tissues that are genetically matched to an individual. Actually, there were three cloned embryos that have been created by a company called Stemagen Corporation, donated by Dr. Samuel Wood, a fertility doctor at this California-based company. While three embryos have actually developed to this stage, by which embryonic stem cells could possibly be extracted for use in studying disease, following up research for replacement tissues for such a task has not proven possible just yet. Studies are developing a new trend through which donated DNA used to clone such embryonic tissues has come from adults rather than embryonic stem cells. Such experiments are the leading thrust of focus for patient specific stem cell research that may be used to treat spinal paralysis, diabetes, and Parkinson's disease. No attempts have been made to clone embryonic stem cell lines from these cloned embryos, but one thing is for sure, the world will be watching. |
