Adult Stem Cells and Vascular Disease Print E-mail
Peripheric vascular disease is caused by an obstruction of blood circulation in a specific area in an organism within human and animal tissues that results in a reduction of blood flow. The Journal of Clinical Investigation recently published a study and analysis on the role and possible potential use of two different types of cell-based treatments for this disease. Based on experimental models using mice, studies are continuing on the use of multipotent adult progenitor stem cells from bone marrow in the treatment of this disease.
One of the most important results of this research was to determine that multipotent adult progenitor stem cells are more effective prior to differentiation, or alteration, because they contribute to increasing not only the quantity of arteries and veins that are generated in a new location, but because they may enhance regeneration of muscular tissue.

Multipotent adult progenitor stem cells are generally obtained from bone marrow, where the proliferation and differentiation of multiple tissues that comply with stem cell criteria are found. Mononuclear cells derived from bone marrow include stem cells that are differentiated as well as differentiated, such as lymphocytes and monocytes.

Further studies will help to identify the role that such stem cells may play upon transplantation in those suffering from Peripheric vascular disease as well as other conditions that involve tissue death, or necrosis. While early studies have shown that such cells show equal benefits in both mice and human tissues, further research is necessary to determine the benefits of additional studies.
