A carbohydrate molecule known as heparin sulfate is known to cover the surface of certain proteins on a cellular surface and is important for the potency, as well as the growth of stem cells. While the molecular function and mechanisms of such cells are still relatively unknown, such research offers potential as a jumping off point for further studies.

The therapeutic potential of stem cells in their ability to self generate and transform into any adult cell type has encouraged researchers and developers to study ways in which such knowledge can be used to treat long-term illnesses such as AIDS, lung and tissue diseases, as well as nerve and muscular conditions and diseases as well. In those who do not receive adequate amounts of carbohydrates, studies showed that various external factors might inhibit the renewal of such stem cells.
