Continuing Research Using Stem Cells to Reduce Cancer Print E-mail
A stem cell research facility in Irvine, California called PrimeGen has announced that their scientists have been able to convert special adult human cells back to what can be considered an embryonic state. Those methods, they say, are less likely to initiate cancerous development than other methods using such adult stem cells have produced to date. This method may also be a more efficient way to reprogram cells used in the development of anticancer treatments.
While such studies have been ongoing since 2006, researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison were able to turn adult stem cells into cells that have the ability to develop into different tissue types such as embryonic cells. The drawbacks to this method were that doing so often initiated tumor growth, which were then present in the reprogrammed cells. In addition, the retrovirus originally used as the transportation vehicle of the genes into cell chromosomes was often liable to cause cancer if they skipped and morphed into his gene cell that slows cell division.

PrimeGen made the announcement at the Stem Cell Summit in New York City that they have solved this very important dilemma. Instead of using genes as a transport vehicle, they have used tiny carbon-based particles coated with DNA mixed with kidney cells, retina cells, as well as skin cells. This technique may be completed within a week. The scientific community waits with bated breath to view results of this technique in the near future.
