While scientists and researchers are just beginning to understand the capabilities of skin cells to create stem cells, recent developments at the Harvard Medical School have discovered a technique that researcher Dr. Willie Lensch says has, "incredible potential." This is because those scientists have succeeded in procuring skin cells from patients suffering from a variety of diseases and turned them all into stem cells.

Such developments will help researchers to understand the basic development and stages of genetic diseases such as Huntington's, Alzheimer's, diabetes, and more. One of the biggest benefits of such a development is the capability of using a patient's own skin cells to help treat their own unique disease processes. The stem cells in the study were developed after taking biopsies of patients stricken with muscular dystrophy and Huntington's disease.

While the results are extremely encouraging and exciting, scientists and researchers caution that full studies need to be processed and that therapies and potential cures are still years away. Such studies will reduce the need to use embryonic stem cells.

While such developments would not totally eradicate the need or development of embryonic stem cells for research and development, it would add potential in the treatment and development of therapies and cures for a wide multitude and range of injuries and diseases. Says Dr. Chris Mason of the United Kingdom National Stem Cell network, "We're looking at the perfect human brick -- ethical, flexible and not rejected by the patient because it comes from a patient themselves."
