Cord Blood Achieving Remission |

The Cord Blood Registry has completed a review of patients suffering from blood disorders that have been treated with stem cells from either their own cord blood or cord blood that has been obtained from siblings. The result of this review stated that a vast majority of those patients have been cured or have entered a state of remission from their disease process. The report, which was presented at the American Society for Blood and Marrow Treatment, is a giant step forward into the ability and potential to transplant non-embryonic umbilical cord blood for the use of treatments and disease processes.
Dr. Jennifer Willert, a senior attending transplant physician and professor at the Rady Children's Hospital University of California in San Diego stated, "This study provides important insights into the ability of transplant physicians to achieve successful outcomes using an individual's own cord blood to treat an environmentally triggered blood disease or cord blood from a family member to treat certain genetic blood disorders and inherited bone marrow failure syndromes."
Two thirds of the patients that were treated with cord blood transplants were either completely cured or have entered into remission stages. Half of these successful cases were treated with their own cord blood.
"This study is relevant to any expectant parent considering whether or not to privately bank, cord blood stem cells." The possibilities facing many of today's expected parents may encourage most of them to obtain and store samples of their child's cord blood for future use.
