A recent announcement by President George W. Bush claimed that the United States would increase funding for "ethical" stem cell research that does not destroy human embryos. This announcement was made during January's State of the Union address before Congress. Within that address, President Bush applauded recent developments in stem cells research that use and employ methods of differentiating or reprogramming adult skin cells to act like embryonic stem cells. Such discoveries, said Bush, have "The potential to move us beyond the divisive debates of the past by extending the frontiers of medicine without the destruction of human life."
President Bush requested that Congress double federal government money and support for such research in the physical sciences. Such support, and easing of moral and ethical debates that have long divided the medical community from the general public, may serve as a breakthrough in the development of cures and therapies in the treatment of formerly genetically related afflictions that have no cure or remission abilities.

While stem cell research still continues, the push by researchers and scientists not only in the United States but also around the world to pursue adult stem cells for the use of therapies and treatments may soon eradicate the need for embryonic stem cells. Said Bush, "To keep America competitive into the future, we must trust in the skill of our scientists and engineers and empower them to pursue the breakthroughs of tomorrow." Developments in adult stem cell research definitely appear to be the wave of the future.
