Germany Steps up to the Plate in Stem Cell Research Print E-mail
It is naturally understandable that Germany is a little slower than other countries around the world to venture into stem cell or genetic research, due to its history, during the Nazi regime in the 1930s and 1940s. As a matter of fact, Germany has strict laws on stem cell research, as well as restriction of using embryonic cells for any type of research due to this sensitive issue that continues to hang over any studies in genetic research or engineering.
However, recent developments and the news that the German government is donating nearly 7 million US dollars over the next three years for stem cell research using only non-embryonic stem cell tissues will support research projects as well is to help Germany enter the race and the drive to create new treatments and potential cures for human disease issues.

Though German scientists and researchers have been at a distinct distant disadvantage of other ongoing international efforts using embryonic stem cells for research, it is not burdened by the moral and ethical disputes and debates that continue to plague the use of embryonic stem cells in research and development, which for Germany, is a definite advantage.
