Increasing Demand For Stem Cell Funding

Perhaps it is an indication of the growing popularity in stem cell research, but the Maryland Stem Cell Research Fund has to date received nearly 125 applications for grant money in its second year of existence. Recent applications show a more than 40% increase in the amount of funding requests since its first year.
The Maryland Stem Cell Research Fund is offering $23 million in grant money. Its first year offered 15 million and received 85 applicants. However, the applications received to date total nearly $62 million. Decisions upon who will receive such grants will be made this coming April and will be based on peer review within the scientific community. Powers that be defined such interest in numbers exciting. Grant applications have been submitted for many exploratory grants, which means that scientists and researchers are focusing on never before tried techniques and possibilities.

The 15-member commission is located in Bethesda, Maryland. Linda Powers, the managing director of Toucan Capital Corp. says, "Those grants, which fill a void left by limited federal funding, give us more bang for the buck in the essential role of the Maryland program. This fund was created every bit as much to get new treatments to patients as it was to support good science."

Nearly 25 applicants have requested fellowships for pre-doctoral students and postdoctoral fellows. The commission will spend the next few weeks deciding on what types of equipment or facilities stem cell scientists and researchers will be likely to share.
