Japanese Stem Cell Banks Print E-mail
The United States is not the only country around the world taking advantage of the huge breakthroughs in non-embryonic stem cell research. Proposal of a stem cell bank located in Tokyo, Japan is being discussed after Japanese scientists and physicians at the Kyoto University announced that a new stem cell type, called pluripotent stem cells, have increased optimism for treatments in regenerative medicine. Shinya Yamanaka of Kyoto University says, "By making such a bank, we can cut down the cost of treatment and also we can shorten the period, which is required for the generation of pluripotent stem cells."
It is hoped around the world that further development and study of such pluripotent cells will help to improve research and development for diseases with injuries as well as those that suffer from diabetes and Parkinson's, among others.  Yamanaka stated that it took about three months to transform skin cells into these pluripotent cells, but that studies and research to shorten the growing time will be initiated for the help in treating spinal cord injury, which needs to be accomplished within about 10 days, is under development.  Such studies may take up to 10 years, but research is forging ahead.
