Jawbones Cultivated from Stem Cells Print E-mail
Recently, a patient in Finland was able to enjoy the benefits of the new jawbone that was cultivated from his own stem cells. The 65-year-old patient had suffered severe tissue damage due to tumor growth, but was able to undergo a bone transplant using stem cells that had been isolated from tissues grown inside his abdomen. Researchers in Finland, determined to isolate stem cells from a patient's own store of fat, grew them for two weeks in a mixture that also incorporated the patient's own blood serum. Later, they were successful in pulling out what they termed mesenchymal stem cells, which are immature cells that may be grown to form blood vessels, muscle tissues, as well as bone tissue.
Riitta Suuronen of the Regea Institute of Regenerative Medicine, which is a part of the University of Tampere in Finland says, "There have been a couple of similar sounding procedures before, but these didn't use the patient's own stem cells that were first cultured and expanded in laboratory and differentiated into bone tissue."

In addition, doctors have reported that this patient is recovering from the procedure at a faster pace than what would have been experienced through a bone graft. Using a patient's own stem cells limits, limits rejection and promotes faster healing. The project was a combination effort between Suuronen and colleagues at Helsinki's University Central Hospital. The procedure is sure to gain worldwide attention in the treatment and reconstructive potential caused by skeletal injury and bone loss.
