Mesenchymal Stem Cells Make the Cut Print E-mail
The Hanson Institute and the Institute for Medical and Veterinary Sciences in South Australia have been studying the benefits of mesenchymal stem cell research for quite some time. Researchers at New York's Columbia University Medical Center have been able to take advantage of the research completed and began to evaluate the stem cells that had been developed there. Their studies focused specifically on what are called mesenchymal precursor cells.
Mesenchymal precursor cells are found in multiple tissue types and enhance multi-potential cell colonies after they have been isolated. These specific cells, once identified, have been known to create what is called a colony forming unit fibroblast. Such stem cells have successfully been isolated from fat tissue, skin, brain tissue, liver, kidney, and spleen tissue as well.

After the cells have been isolated, they can be controlled in how they divide and replicate. In roughly 6 weeks, 10 to 15 billion cells can form from a million. These cells are able to develop into bone, heart muscle, arterial wall  and cartilage tissues.

The developments and potential use of mesenchymal stem cells in helping to create new organ tissues is limitless. Further research and development is continuing in this study of how these developed tissues behave, live and grow.

Clinical therapies are still pending, and researchers around the world will continue to focus their efforts and attention on the mesenchymal stem cells that make the cut for further research and development.
