Recent development in stem cell research has taken great strides in the past months, in the formation of potential treatments for muscular-neuro diseases that afflict millions of patients around the world. While techniques to transplant blood in diseased immune systems have previously been developed with aggressive treatments of radiotherapy, which wiped out a faulty immune system before a bone marrow transplant can proceed, such may no longer be the case. While such experiments have only been performed on mice to date, the benefits of great potential in humans in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis and other neuromuscular diseases as well as blood-borne diseases that are caused by genetic defects is on the rise.
Stem cell studies and research to find better treatments for multiple sclerosis are in the early stages of development. For people whose blood stem cells harbor severe genetic defects that cause such diseases like sickle cell anemia, replacing them with healthy stem cells would enable restoration of normal blood. While bone marrow transplants have been used to treat sickle cell anemia with very good results in children, adults are a different matter. This is because in adults, rejection of any foreign tissues is rather common. However, the promise of studies showing a high rate of success in the transplantation of healthy blood into formerly diseased tissues shows greater promise than ever before. While stem cell research and therapy is still in its infancy, there is finally hope on the horizon for millions of people around the world.
