Stem cell research, and more specifically non-embryonic stem cell research, has made enormous progress and advancements in the last month. Because of this, new methods to reprogram adult cells may have the potential to replace embryonic stem cells in the field of research and medical development. The ability to reprogram adult cells without the need of human embryonic tissues has encouraged not only extensive media attention, but helps to relieve the burden of moral and ethical disapproval and conflict that has plagued researchers and scientists for many years.
The exciting concept of being able to create cells that are genetically matched to various individuals gives the research community great encouragement in the potential to creating stem cells for just about any type of tissue found within the human body. Leading such stem cell research are scientists from Japan and the United States, in Wisconsin and California, who have been able to independently engineer four different genes from skin cells. These stem cells are known as pluripotent stem cells, because they have the capacity and the ability to develop into any type of cell found within the human body.

Because they can divide indefinitely and into a multiple variety of cells, labs and scientists are encouraged that it may be possible to take skin cells from a patient suffering from a specific disease and revert them to a state prior to the development of that disease, thus potentially replacing diseased cells with healthy ones and curing the disease..
