A recent meeting of the National Stem Cell Network in Edinburgh, Scotland was formulated and designed to bring together scientists to explore possibilities and achievements in recent stem cell research. In addition, the meeting included individuals, companies, and organizations anxious to fund and pioneer research and transplant therapies involving stem cells. Scientists discussed the potential cures and treatments for conditions such as Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, neuromuscular damage, blindness, Type 1 diabetes and many more as they discussed the various achievements of research and development within the past year. While they all agree that stem cell treatments for stroke patients or those suffering from various forms of heart disease are still years away, the potential treatment and cure of many diseases looms on the horizon. Says Dr Chris Mason of the University College London and the United Kingdom National Stem Cell Network, "People are beginning to experience the real value of stem cell therapies. Hundreds of cancer patients have received stem cells as part of their therapy. In London, patients with age-related blindness are having cells from their good eye used to regenerate their bad eye." Such developments and potential provide positive funding potentials and grant money from a multiple variety of sources. While there have been great advancements in non-embryonic and adult stem cell tissue studies, Dr Willie Lensch at the Children's Hospital in Boston says, "We do not know which sources of stem cells will be the most useful treatments in the long run." |
