Sea worms and starfish prove helpful in stem cell research Print E-mail

A marine biotechnology company, GylcoMar Ltd, that makes products obtained from marine invertebrates, has a grant of £70,000 for research and development of products needed for the growth of human stem cells. The process to do that includes using blood drawn from worms and starfish and other forms of marine invertebrates.

GlycoMar already uses a process of withdrawing mucus from the surface of the skin of starfish and then developing it to treat medical problems like asthma. This is the first time they have been given the chance to take their technology into the stem cell market thanks to this grant.

Dr Charlie Bavington, Managing Director of this company expressed immense pleasure in receiving this grant calling it an opportunity to diversify into the world stem market in association with Roslin Cells; the UK’s most recognized stem cell company.

He explains that marine invertebrates have a great capacity for regeneration and growth from their own stem cell bank and thus would be ideal candidates in this study. Also since they are non-mammalian marine bodies, the risk of being contaminated with pathogens like BSE is also lower.

He emphasized the growing importance of stem cell research that helps treat serious diseases and suggested that organized procedures are needed to fully realize the potential of this research.

Aidan Courtney, CEO of Roslin Cells also expressed full support for this project. This will be an 18 month project that will come up with solutions that meet all legislative requirements.
