Skeptical Laboratories and Stem Cell Research Print E-mail
Recently it was pointed out in the news world that a small biotechnical company had created stem cells without also destroying the human embryos or caused inducement of cancer causing genes. These issues have been plaguing researchers and c=scientists for the last few months as they continue to strive for the perfect combination of genes and environments.
The company, named PrimeGem, announced this new process but failed to explain how it did so. It also sidestepped the natural course of publishing results by failing to publish is journals such as Science or Nature. After frequent requests to publish its findings, PrimeGem finally did so.

PrimeGem recently remarked that instead of using the cancer-causing genes to replicate the stem cells, scientists used unspecified carbon-based delivery systems to insert four proteins into the cells to stimulate the mitotic process. PrimeGem also stated that they had used retinal, testicular, and skin cells for this process. PrimeGems president, John Sundsmo stated that although their goals are ambitious, that they believe they might be used in clinics as soon as 2010.

While the advances are being made earnestly and quickly, all biotechnical companies should be encouraged to publish advancements for the common good. Monetary gains are important but should take a back seat in this great race for cures for thousands of ill and diseased individuals worldwide. All research should be open for peer review as is a standard in the field now.
