Sperm Created from Female Stem Cells

Recent developments at the University of Newcastle in Great Britain have indicated that very primitive sperm cells can be created with female embryonic stem cell tissues. Does this mean that men will become obsolete? That's extremely doubtful. Professor Nayemia, of Stem Cell Biology at Newcastle University, says, "I think, in principle, it will be scientifically possible."
Such a breakthrough is only in the very initial stages of study, and does not by any means imply that men are no longer needed to create donor cells, or DNA and chromosomes for the reproductive process. It is necessary for genes from a Y-chromosome to go through DNA replication, followed by two rounds of division, to create an embryo, and this Y-chromosome is only present in men. Developing studies in reproductive and cancer, neural, and brain tissues research studies in embryonic and non-embryonic stem cells have widened the door to offer potentials in breakthroughs in treatments and a wide variety of medical conditions and disease processes.

The University of Newcastle will seek permission to attempt to create sperm from bone marrow from a female volunteer. While the outcome of such an experiment is uncertain, it may be allowed as long as stem cells are not derived from embryonic tissues.

The search of knowledge to determine the process of stem cell creation or replication does not mean that scientists and medical professionals will be allowed to run amok with such knowledge. Ethical and moral grounds still heavily influences funding, as well as perpetuation of such research throughout the world.
