Stem Cell Clinical Trials Print E-mail

The goal of two federally funded studies in the early months of 2008 are focusing on the dosage and timing of stem cell therapy and adults who have suffered from stroke as well as newborns suffering from ischemic injuries. The determination of those two factors is imperative before clinical trials can even start, says a neuroscientist at the Medical Center of Georgia, and Charlie Norwood Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

Such studies have steadily improved to show a 25% gain in recovery over controls, and such cell therapy pilot studies indicate that stem cell therapy can be extremely beneficial up to seven days after occurrence of a stroke. Ischemic brain injuries account for nearly 10% of cases of cerebral palsy and about 80% of strokes.  The development of such clinical trials may prove to provide a breakthrough in the treatment of brain injuries.

If such laboratory studies initiate promising results of prior studies, researchers are hoping to begin clinical trials for treatment of ischemic injuries in adults and children within the next couple of years. "We are looking at different procedures that we can adopt from the laboratory for the clinic," says Dr. Cesario Borlongan, principal investigator of the National Institutes of Health Grants. The funds, which total $6 million, will allow research and development in long-term benefits of cell therapy. "We have the last ten years of basic research that clearly shows that stem cells have the potential to be a new therapy for adult stroke."
