A middle-aged man suffering from advanced lymphoma was able to enter remission following chemotherapy. Though his cancer returned several years later, he now leads a productive life, thanks to a successful stem cell transplant. Despite enormous advances in embryonic stem cell research, ethical dilemmas and moral obligations continued to haunt studies and treatments. The use of unused embryos generated from unsuccessful in vitro fertilizations has been given a chance to help alleviate human disease processes, injuries, and suffering. While science and education have helped to improve the acceptability of certain types of stem cell research, the advancements made in non-embryonic or adult skin stem cell treatments and developments do not come with the burden that embryonic stem cell research endures. While embryonic stem cells are the most versatile, and can generate into heart, muscle, bone, skin, brain and pancreatic tissues, adult stem cells are being explored to their fullest potential to determine their benefits and capability of developing into like tissues and cells. Blood and bone marrow stem cell therapy has saved thousands of patients suffering from blood cancers and disorders. Treatment with these stem cells has also helped to alleviate symptoms of multiple sclerosis, diabetes, and problems of those who have suffered heart attacks. Stem cells are being developed to treat spinal cord injuries, Parkinson's, and might someday help to prevent or alleviate symptoms of Alzheimer's. It is important for people to understand what stem cells are and how they may be used to their fullest potential to alleviate pain and suffering. |
