Recent studies have proven the effectiveness of multipotent adult stem cells extracted from bone marrow in the regeneration of blood tissues as well as muscle tissues in treating Peripheric vascular disease. Two separate research groups, one from the University Hospital of Navarro and the Center for Applied Medical Research and the Center for Molecular and Vascular biology at the Catholic University of Leuven in Belgium joined together to study the role and potential use of two different types of cell-based treatments for Peripheric vascular disease. This disease involves the obstruction of blood circulation in vessels and tissues in the body that if not addressed in treated in time, may lead to tissue death as well as gangrene and loss of limb..
Multipotent adult procurator stem cells are obtained from bone marrow and have the capacity to proliferate and differentiate in a wide variety of tissues. The studies of these groups focused on the efficacy of both cell populations in the treatment of Peripheric ischemia. Using marrowbone cells for treatment, their studies focus on determining the differences in efficiency between these two types of stem cells.

Early findings have determined that adult pluripotent stem cells are quite effective when injected because they may help muscles grow. Progenitor cells that have been implanted in mice did achieve improvement of muscular and blood vessel conditions, but further studies will be necessary to determine the difference in effect in such cellular growth between humans and mice. While the study was carried out using cell populations from mice and humans, analyzing results showed identical benefits.
