Stem Cells By Any Other Name |

|
Most people don't realize that there are many different types of stem cells. Embryonic stem cells have been in the news most often because of the ongoing debate over moral and ethical testing and research when using such cells. However, adult tissue stem cells have provoked a surge of research in beneficial therapies for people suffering from a wide range of illnesses and injuries. For example, retinal stem cells are being studied to help repair damage caused by retinitis pigmentosa and macular degeneration. Liver bone marrow stem cells can help repair liver damage. Pancreatic stem cells can help regenerate beta, pancreatic insulin producing cells, and skeletal muscle stem cells may help to heal and proliferate new cell growth and response to both injury and exercise.
Research and techniques as well as developments of various types of stem cells are all different. Recent developments have proven that stem cells may also be harvested from adult human skin as well as umbilical cord tissue, which will help to generate further interest in the research of stem cells without having to worry so much about the ethical and moral dilemmas caused by embryonic stem cell research.
