Several years ago, California approved $3 billion of taxpayers' money to be spent on stem cell research within the next decade. New therapies that may help to prevent long-term care necessity as well as cures for formerly uninsurable diseases are hoped to save billions of dollars in health care costs not only in California, but also around the United States. Unfortunately, voters are still waiting for results. Even more unfortunately, much of that money has been tied up in lawsuits. However, the overall consensus among Americans, in terms of non-embryonic stem cell research and development, displays approval and encouragement for continuation of such studies. Though such studies may cost taxpayers billions of dollars in the long run, it will also help to create jobs and positions for thousands of citizens hoping to enter the medical research field. While taxpayers in the United States may hesitate to fork over the money for the development and creation of such research, funding provided by grants is already helping many stem cell research companies gain extensive ground in the study and development of stem cell therapies and treatments. Regardless of where the money comes from, non-embryonic stem cell research has the potential to reduce chronic health care expenses. In some cases, long-term health care for people afflicted with heart disease, diabetes, Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease may cost upward of half $1 million per person. Eradicating such a burden from not only the health insurance system, but for individuals, will be a major accomplishment. |
