A recent meeting of Cell Therapy for Cardiovascular Disease, held at Columbia University, enjoyed the attendance of more than 300 researchers and physicians from around the world. The meeting, sponsored by the Cardiovascular Research Foundation, has encouraged the gathering and the announcement that clinical and preclinical data on adult stem cells generated information that two previous studies show extreme promise in the use of adult muscle stem cells taken from patients themselves to treat their own heart failure.
It was announced that nearly 83% of patients who have been treated with this technique using adult muscle stem cells harvested from thigh muscle tissue have improved. Doctors from around the world produced and discussed their compiled data on studies that ranged from improved blood flow to reduction of scar tissues that resulted from coronary heart attacks. Two cell types, called adipose stem cells, which are fat stem cells, and endothelial progenitor cells did more to improve blood flow when combined together than those used separately.
The fact that these adult stem cells are harvested from the patients themselves and do not rely on embryonic stem cell tissues has encouraged development and demand for further studies. Funding has been provided to help scientists around the world continue such experiments and studies. Clinical studies are also progressing in bone marrow cell studies as well as recent developments in other organ, stem cell development, growth, and potential such as found in the pancreas, kidneys and liver.
