International stem cell Corp., a California biotechnology company that focuses on developing research and therapeutic products, has announced that it will be available to provide corneal epithelial cells derived from parthenogenetic stem cells and a specific type of human skin cells (keratinocytes) for use in clinical trials that focus on developing tissue transplant technology and therapies to improve a vision condition called photorefractive keratectomy, a.k.a. PRK. This is a joint effort by not only International Stem Cell Corp., but is in addition to collaboration with the University of California San Diego Shiley Eye Center, the Birmingham Research Institute in La Jolla, California, the State University of New York at Albany, and the University of Michigan. This recent discovery will provide forward momentum in culturing various immune resistant ocular tissues and the development of use of human stem cells for the study and cure of disease in various parts of the body. Parthenogenetic stem cells can be matched to millions of people without risk of immune response system rejection, and may reduce ethical and moral hesitance and support as well. PRK allows better vision improvement and fewer side effects than the more popular LASIK process surgeries. Says Jeff Krstich, chief executive officer for international stem cell Corp, "It is exciting to have ourselves involved in studies that could lead to a safer and more effective treatment that hopefully will provide improved visual recovery, less pain, and an improved refractive correction outcome." |
