There is no doubt that embryonic stem cell research has long been a bone of contention with people around the world. However, the use of adult stem cell therapy instead of using embryonic stem cells has become somewhat of a standard of care when determining treatments and therapies for cancer patients. During the past 10 years, clinical trials that have involved the use of adult stem cells show strong indication that cancer patients are being helped by such therapies.
A recent report published by the Northwestern University Freiberg School of Medicine states that one patient suffering from multiple sclerosis has enjoyed a complete remission of symptoms. After enrolling in clinical trials in 2003, the patient underwent five days of chemotherapy to destroy the immune cells in his body. Doctors then used his own stem cells to help rebuild his immune system.

A team of physicians at the Northwestern University Freiberg School of Medicine has recently reviewed outcomes of over 2000 patients who have undergone some sort of stem cell transplants. Those suffering from autoimmune diseases have shown great improvement, including remission as well as improvements in basic heart functions of patients who suffered from heart attacks.

The review appears in the Journal of the American Medical Association. "It's a whole new approach to these diseases," says Dr. Richard Byrd. "There is a very low risk. Less than 1% mortality from a procedure." Such developments have enabled the initiation of clinical trials in liver cancer, spinal cord injuries, and brain diseases and injuries.
