Several research institutes in San Diego, California, have decided to put their heads together and collaborate in stem cell research and studies. The planned center will be called the San Diego Consortium for Regenerative Medicine. Collaboration efforts by researchers and developers from the Scripps Research Institute, Birmingham, Institute for Medical Research, the Salk Institute and the University of California at San Diego will join in this effort.

The Salk Institute has one of the strongest and most established stem cell programs in the United States. The Scripps Research Institute is famous for its chemistry, which has helped to produce and promote multiple drugs and treatments. The University of California at San Diego offers bioengineers and a medical school that will enable the consortium to access patients who may benefit from the research and therapies developed by these powerful research institutes.

Larry Goldstein, a Howard Hughes Institute stem cell researcher at the University of California at San Diego says, "We have this vision of getting people with common interests in the same place so you get a synergy that enhances everyone's individual capacity and makes things go faster." The collaborative efforts of some of the best minds in medical research and development and stem cell research are certain to create and develop potential therapies and treatments.

Independent institutes often compete for grants, so having four well-known institutions join hands, experience, effort, and dedication to stem cell research will benefit from the focus on the potential of such research.
