Umbilical Cord Blood Donations Print E-mail
New technology has enabled new ways to harvest stem cells that do not destroy human embryos, thus advancing scientific research and saving lives. While much is not known about the functions of stem cells, they are known to be able to mutate, if you will, into any other type of cell that it is situated with.
According to the leading awareness groups, the United States currently has 12 states that have joined ranks and opened donation centers in hospitals for pregnant mothers. Upon the birth of their child, women may now, free of charge, donate their child’s umbilical cord blood and placental blood for research and transplant use.

This discovery makes it more palatable for previously opposed groups to accept newer technology and health care modalities using tissue that would just be disposed of anyway. No harm is done to mother or child when these donations are made. While bills have been passed, the Senate is still awaiting a full vote on the matter.

Visit informative websites such as cordbloodawarness.org for additional information and links to educate the public. Knowledge is power, and power is one key to continuing the fight for help in the stem cell research arena. Not only will donation centers save individual states millions of research dollars, but every woman has the ability to have a say in the future of their children and strangers alike
