Umbilical Cord Transplants Print E-mail
A pregnant mother is about to give birth to her fourth child and in addition to the wonderful miracle of birth, this new mother also has a second blessing in disguise. The birth of her fourth daughter just may save the life of her second daughter, a beautiful three-year old.
This woman, who cannot be named for reasons of privacy, has a three-year-old daughter that desperately needs a bone marrow transplant to treat bone cancer. The child, nicknamed “Princess”, is battling acute lymphoblastic leukemia, one of the most devastating childhood cancers at present.

With the advancement in stem cell research that is continually making progress, it is quite possible that even if the umbilical cord blood does not match the soon to be sister’s blood type, the mother is still able to donate the cord blood to a bank for use for another life saving donation.

While numerous centers are opening to store and maintain cord blood throughout the country, it remains an expensive endeavor, but when examined next to the life of a newborn, cost becomes secondary to healthcare providers and parents alike. For those of you readers out there that are unaware of the ability to help this cause, please call your local blood bank center or local hospital for more information about the process of donating umbilical cord blood and placentas
