Visionary Benefits of Stem Cell ResearchVisionary Benefits of Stem Cell Research Print E-mail
Stem cell research has experienced a recent breakthrough that may possibly change the way research is conducted within boundaries that have been set by the US government and ethics committees worldwide. Previously, only embryonic stem cells have been approved for use in testing and for research purposes in the search for cures to tissue damage that occurs with neurological disease or nervous system insult. With the recent discovery that skin cells have been used to copy the actions of embryonic cells, a new path has been paved.
If scientists move forward without alienating right to life activists, the moral-right movement, conservative church groups and ethics activists, there is no limit to what can be done. Imagine the research that can be completed regarding cell life activity and replacement processes. Not only does this enable scientists to learn even more about the intricate workings of simple nerve cells, for example, but also allows an in depth look as to what mechanisms cause cell differentiation and purpose.
Cells may be ‘created’ to replace destroyed retinal cells in order to allow the blind to see or the paralyzed patient to walk again. While this type of research is in its infant stage, maybe our children will see the finished product of this current breakthrough. While some conservative groups may see this type of activity as “playing God”, many in the scientific and healthcare communities see this as an opportunity to build a better quality of life for those who have been injured, diseased or incapacitated.
