Stem Cell Transplant Saves Boy

Pioneering stem cell technology has saved the life of a seven-year-old Emirati boy and given hope to thousands of others like him in the UAE. After being diagnosed with the rare blood disorder thalassaemia, Ahmed Mohammed Ahmed was attached to machines for 12 hours a day, forced to undergo regular life-saving blood transfusions and therapy to remove excessive iron from his body.

His family had stored the stem cells from his sister's umbilical cord blood when she was born, and stored them with UK based company, Smart Cells International.   Ahmed and his sister had a compatible tissue match, and he was able to undergo a stem cell transplant using his sister's cord blood stem cells.
