ADVICE FOR MOTHERS WISHING TO STORE CORD BLOOD AT RISK IF WEST NILE VIRUS

SCI has adopted the following policy regarding exposure or possible exposure to West Nile Virus (WNV).

Obligatory must not donate if:
a) A mother has been diagnosed with WNV infection whilst in an endemic area or following her return to the UK or a particular partner territory during this pregnancy.
b) It is less than six months from a mother’s return from a WNV endemic area and she has had a history of symptoms suggestive of WNV while there or on return to the UK a particular partner territory during this pregnancy.

Can donate if:
c) A mother has lived in or visited an area which is endemic for WNV but is and has been asymptomatic, in which case please advise SCI so that we can annotate your cord blood/tissue storage records to ensure clinical teams are aware and appropriate testing of the product for WNV can be arranged prior to using sample(s) for therapeutic purposes.

We recommend that you speak to your GP if you have any concerns regarding Zika Virus.
